I have recently purchased a 16hh 4 year old Standardbred gelding. He had worms quite badly when I got him and as a result is now very very skinny. He has been wormed now, and the change in his coat is remarkable. Now I just need to get him to put on some weight! He is in light-moderate work about 4-5 times per week, on good pasture (though he doesn't seem to eat much grass) and I feed him chaff and NRM Coolade daily. I want to know how much Coolade I should be feeding him to get him to bulk up in time for winter or if there is anything else that might work.

Thank you for your query

The amount of NRM Coolade that you feed will depend entirely on your horses condition, weight and workload. From the information you have provided I am going to assume your horse is in the 450 to 550kg range which means the recommended rate is between 3.5 to 5kg per day. Depending on the quantity you are feeding now you could either increase the NRM Coolade to this level or possibly switch his feed to a more calorie dense option.

A suitable alternative feed which will help to build condition by introducing more calories into his diet is NRM LowGIsport. NRM LowGIsport contains low starch levels versus conventional feeds with the majority of calories being derived from ‘cool’ energy sources in the form of fat and fibre.  NRM Low GI Sport is unique to most ‘cool feeds’ as it has a higher calorie level therefore perfect for horses that require weight gain. The ‘cool’ energy comes from sources such as the super fibre beet pulp and the high fat stabilized rice bran supplement KER Equi-Jewel. NRM LowGIsport also contains a KER premix which means at the recommended intakes your horse will receive its daily intake of vitamins and minerals except salt. Always follow the recommended feed rates for you horses weight and work level.

I hope you find this information useful.
