Dear Tanya
Thank you for your query.
Obviously there are a raft of consideration that need to be accounted for when designing a ration for a horse that ties up. The most appropriate feeding regime that I can recommend for your horse would be a combination of NRM LowGIsport and KER Equi Jewel. NRM LowGIsport contains no cereal grain so is considerably lower in starch versus conventional feeds with the majority of calories being derived from ‘cool’ energy sources in the form of fat and fibre. NRM LowGIsport is unique to most ‘cool feeds’ as it has a higher calorie level therefore perfect for horses that require weight gain or in moderate to heavy work. The ‘cool’ energy comes from sources such as the super fibre beet pulp and the high fat stabilized rice bran supplement KER Equi-Jewel. NRM LowGIsport also contains a KER premix which means at the recommended intakes your horse will receive its daily intake of vitamins and minerals except salt. It is important to also keep in mind that you should supply salt to the horse daily especially during times of heavy sweat loss and always follow the recommended feed rates for you horses weight and work level.
KER Equi Jewel is a high fat rice bran supplement which has been balanced with Calcium, Selenium and Vitamin E. KER Equi Jewel will help to increase the calorie density of the ration with minimal effect on the bulk of the ration. Its popularity stems largely from the fact that fat increases the energy density of the meal, so horses can potentially eat less to consume the same number of calories. It is important to also keep in mind that you should supply salt to the horse daily especially during times of heavy sweat loss.
It is quite possible that the feed is not the sole cause of the horses tying up so I have attached an article which will hopefully bring to light any other potential causes of the issue.
I hope you find this information useful
