I have a clydie cross gelding who I just use for pleasure riding, he's not getting ridden much at the moment. He has lost a little weight over winter but is certainly not skinny! I've been told that he's lacking in Vit A & E, selenium, copper & zinc. He gets meadow hay everyday and Economix & meadow chaff a couple of times a week but may become more frequent. What would you suggest as far as feed and supplements go. Many thanks, Sheryl

Dear Sheryl,

Thank you for your query,

From what you are telling me it sounds like your horse is in optimum condition and is getting plenty of roughage (ideally 1.5% of his body weight per day) so it is difficult to give you any good reason to change your current ration. As always keep in mind that if his condition continues to change you will need to modify his ration accordingly. If this occurs a simple increase in the volume of hard feed could help account for the additional energy he is using.

As far as the vitamins and minerals go it is very important to make sure when receiving advice on your horses nutrients that it comes from a reputable source i.e vet or lab tests, misinformation about vitamins and minerals can lead to over or under supplementation. If your horse is indeed lacking in these vitamins and minerals you could consider using NRM Equine Balancer. This pellet will not effect the horses calorie intake (and therefore weight) but will supply him with his daily requirement of vitamins and minerals except salt. By supplementing NRM Equine Balancer you will be helping to ensure that he will not be lacking in any essential vitamins and minerals.

I hope you find this information useful.

Kind regards,
Richard Brosnan
