On Friday 22nd August 2008, the SPCA was called out to a farm where there were reports of under fed and neglected horses.
The property contained a total of 11 horses. There was no evidence of farm management, no pasture, broken fences and the paddocks were covered in faeces. All the horses were in a poor state and all but one were taken by the SPCA to be treated by a vet and rehabilitated. Unfortunately the worst of the Horses, Muffy had to be euthanized due to its appalling condition.
One of the rescued Horses was called Freddy, he was a under grown, 7 year old stallion. At the time of rescue he had a body score 1, full upper body rain scold/mud fever, hair loss, skin loss, was lethargic and weak and had lice. Freddy also had a halter cutting into head and wore only three shoes.
When NRM was made aware of this case they donated a large amount of Evolve feed to the SPCA. In just a month the difference in Freddy is amazing, his coat colour had completely changed and he looked 100% happier and healthier.
The work the SPCA staff carried out on Freddy was outstanding and showed that horses in even the poorest of conditions can be saved and turned around with hard work and dedication.
