Biosecurity
Bovine bio-security programmes with Antec Virkon S
Calves need the best possible start in life, and cows need the best possible care at calving to ensure a good profitable lactation. A crucial factor in achieving these aims is to make sure that the calving environment is as clean and pathogen free as possible. Calving should be in a designated building away from the rest of the herd. The building should be thoroughly cleaned of all organic debris and then pressure washed using heavy duty detergent. All surfaces should be sprayed with Antec Virkon S at a dilution of 1:200 at a rate of 300ml per square metre. Remove all bedding, cleansings and discharges after each calving. Clean and disinfect with Antec Virkon S at a dilution of 1:200. Clean buckets and utensils regularly with Antec Virkon S at a dilution of 1:100.
Calf pneumonia and calf scours cost the farming industry millions every year - losses resulting not only from deaths, but from reduced feed conversion efficiency, poor growth and, of course, the cost of treatment. However, with efficient hygiene management practices in place, these twin scourges of the cattle farmer need not be accepted as an inescapable part of life - they can be controlled.
Use 'all in all out' policy - do not mix age groups. Ensure adequate colostrum intake when possible. Buy calves from one source only. Do not overstock. Thoroughly clean and disinfect the buildings before occupation - use Antec Virkon S at a dilution of 1:200 at a rate of 300 ml per square metre. Check buildings for good, draught free ventilation (try the 'smoke bucket' technique; burn some straw in a metal bucket and watch the smoke escape from the building). Never use dusty or mouldy bedding. Use vaccines only after proper consultation with your vet. Clean buckets and utensils regularly with Antec Virkon S at a dilution of 1:100.
Where coccidiosis or cryptosporidia has been a problem, use Oo-cide to disinfect and kill hardy oocysts.
